The National Hockey League is the oldest professional sports league in North America having been active since 1917. Originally taking place exclusively between Canadian sides Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas (now known as the Toronto Maple Leafs), Montreal Canadians, and the Montreal Wanderers (no longer active), before the inclusion of sides from the US including the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers. There are currently 32 active NHL franchises spread across an Eastern and Western Conference with the East split into an Atlantic and a Metropolitan division, and the West split into a Central and a Pacific division.

The regular season of the NHL typically runs from October to April, with each team playing 82 games. Teams play against opponents both within and outside their own division and conference, with a greater emphasis on divisional games. The top three teams from each division plus two wildcard teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs.

The NHL Playoffs are played between the best sides in each conference and division to compete for the coveted Stanley Cup trophy. The playoffs consist of four rounds: the first round, second round, conference finals, and Stanley Cup Finals. Each series is a best-of-seven format, where the first team to win four games advances to the next round.
