Former UFC Featherweight champion Ilia Topuria makes his debut at Lightweight against the #2 ranked Charles Oliveira. Topuria vacated the belt following a knockout of Max Holloway in his first title defence, citing struggles to make weight as well as a lack of interest in the competition available at Featherweight as his reasons behind moving up a division. UFC veteran Charles Oliveria enters the fight on the back of a unanimous decision win against Michael Chandler following a split decision loss against Arman Tsarukyan in last years’ Lightweight title eliminator. Pantoja is one of the most dominant champions in the UFC with three consecutive title defences against Brandon Royval, Steve Erceg, and Kai Asakura. He is also on a seven-fight win streak having last been defeated by Askar Askarov back in 2020. Comparatively, Kai Kara-France has a much more irregular record having lost twice in his last three fights, but an entertaining TKO victory against Steve Erceg has presented him with the opportunity to fight for the belt. Pantoja and Kara-France have fought previously in the quarterfinals of The Ultimate Fighter: Tournament of Champions with Pantoja winning a unanimous decision to take him to the semifinals; he was officially signed to the UFC’s roster shortly after.
