The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A is the top division in Brazilian football with 20 teams contesting the championship every year. Across the course of 38 matchdays, clubs face each of their league rivals twice with the accumulated points gained from these clashes deciding the final table standings. Those with a top 4 finish (extra slots are sometimes allocated depending on the victors of other domestic and international competitions) gain a spot in the group stages of the Copa Libertadores de América – the most prestigious competition in South American Football held annually by CONMEBOL, while the 5th and 6th placed clubs enter in the second round. Furthermore, a league finish between 7th and 12th in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A qualifies clubs for the Copa Sudamericana – just as with the Copa Libertadores, this is subject to change. At the bottom of the Brazilian Serie A table, the 4 lowest placed clubs as relegated to the Brazilian Serie B swapping places with the 4 highest placed in the division below.

Notable clubs playing in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A include; CR Flamengo, Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, SE Palmeiras, São Paulo FC, and many more. With 15 different clubs being named champions of the Brazilian Serie A since it’s inception, the league comes with a high level of competition and a love for football that is deeply interwoven within its culture.
